The Digital Quilt: Photography, Printing, Stitching (4-5 Day Class)

The Digital Quilt: Photography, Printing and Stitching is an introductory class taught by photo artist Kerby Smith and art quilter, Lura Schwarz Smith. It is open to all levels of quilters and photographers but you do need intermediate computer skills to be successful in the class.

The goal of this course is to demystify the technology behind digital photography and printing on fabric. The number one question that we get from our students that have tried to print on fabric before is, how do I get good color on fabric?

The class is divided into two sections: Digital Boot Camp for Quilters, taught by Kerby followed by Art Quilts with Digital Fabric instructed by Lura. Kerby gives you tips on how to get the most out of your digital camera, process your digital photo in Adobe Photoshop Elements and how to get the best results when you print them on fabric. Once you have printed out your digital fabric Lura teaches you a variety of composition and construction techniques to combine your digital fabrics with other fabrics to create an exciting wall art quilt.

After the Digital Boot Camp for Quilters Kerby will remain in the class to print fabric and to continue to help students with questions they have about Photoshop, including picture editing and digital image processing.

If there is time and interest, Kerby may conduct a second photo walkabout for students to work on their digital photo technique.

In the second part of this class Lura shows you her techniques for punching up the fabric using an assortment of colored pencils, textile paints and fabric inks. Then she shows you how to merge your digital fabric with other fabrics to produce an art quilt top.
